Lock and Disable Feature for Layers
To create a smoother customer journey, we’ve improved how the locking feature works in the design tool.
What Changed
Previously, when you locked an object, customers could not unlock it. This often caused usability issues when they wanted to customize their product.
With the update:
- Both you and your customers can unlock a locked layer if not permanently “disabled”.
- If you had a locked layer before the update (August 28th, 2025), the “disabled” setting is now automatically turned on.
- The locking feature may have automatically locked certain layers (like large transparent overlays, shields, or borders) so they don’t interfere with customers trying to upload photos or edit text. For objects that are not intended to be interacted with or generally ignored: consider locking or soft-locking the object so that users engage with the objects you intend for them to engage with.
Note: Automatic locking of layers only applies to designs that were originally created or published before August 28, 2025. Any designs created after that date will not have automatic locking applied.
How to Disable a Layer from Customer Interaction
If you want to prevent customers from editing or moving a specific layer entirely, you can disable interaction with it:
- Open the design tool and select the layer you’d like to lock.
- On the right-hand side of the screen, toggle on the “Disable All Object Interaction” button to stop customers from interacting with that layer.
- Click Done and continue through the post-for-sale flow.
That’s it! The layer will remain in your design, but customers won’t be able to accidentally move or change it when customizing their product.
When to use “Lock” vs “Disable”.
Lock
You can “lock” layers to ensure your design displays a certain way and provides customers with a smooth experience when customizing. This feature is helpful when you want specific layers to appear as intended but still give customers the flexibility to make further edits if needed. This is also a great step to avoid any accidental moves or edits on the customers end and should be utilized for a smoother customization experience.
Shown below; To lock a layer, go to the Layers tab, click the lock icon next to the layer, and then post your product for sale. In the design tool, customers will see the layer locked by default, but they can unlock it if they’d like to make changes - the layer isn’t permanently disabled.
Disable
If you have elements that you are certain a customer will not want to interact with, then you can “Disable” it. This is also a necessary step if you have any licensing concerns about purchased elements from a third party being altered. Please only use this when completely necessary, as customization restrictions can cause a bad customer experience when not needed!
